Several years ago I purchased a pair of large canvas art at a garage sale. Together they cost me $3.00. I didn’t love the art on them and they didn’t fit with my decor, but I loved how big and sturdy they were. They’ve been sitting in my garage, waiting for me to do something fun and exciting with them! Now that I have my new jigsaw, I decided to experiment with cutting my first shape! I had this vision in my head of a large canvas with black and white stripes and then a thin wooden shamrock in the middle!
I used the shamrock I made in Illustrator (cutting file of the shamrock available in my FREE Resource Library!) and I sized it to be 12×12. Then I printed it on 4 sheets of paper, taped them together and cut out my template.
Then I set traced it on to my thin piece of wood and began cutting. It was quite interesting! It wasn’t perfect but it was kind of crazy fun! I can’t explain the empowerment I feel with tools in my hands and those ugly goggles on my eyes as I plow my way through actual wood to create a shape that started as a simple design on my computer! It’s the best!
Once it was finished, I sanded it down a bit. I kind of like a little bit imperfect. I think it adds to the story! And I painted my canvas. I was very purposeful in making my lines not perfect and I loved how bold it turned out!
Next, I painted the shamrock a mustard yellow color and added fine glitter as I went. This way it stuck to the paint and all of it dried together.
My last step was to use an all purpose glue to stick the shamrock in the middle and hung it by my front door!
I may never want to take it down! I’m in love with it! So, now it’s your turn. What will you create with a shamrock cutting file? It’s sized on a 12×12 canvas. You can print and cut it out as a template or use it in your cutting machine. With March around the corner, I’d love to see what fun things you come up with!
