How to Round Corners in Photoshop Elements

3 Steps to Create an Amazing Cluster

One of the awesome benefits to digital scrapbooking is you can create endless amounts of layers to a page but it isn’t any more difficult to slide into a sheet than a layout with a single layer! I love using drop shadows and multiple elements to create depth in a digital layout.

Today I’m going to walk you through 3 key steps that will help you create amazing clusters.

Let’s start with a simple layout and photo:

Even with a drop shadow under the photo, it looks very flat and boring! I could add a title and some journaling and it would pass as a layout, but what if I create some fun clusters on the page?

Step 1: Start with Paints and Papers

I always like to start from the bottom and build up. In this case, I’m going to add a few paint splatters and some paper pieces. I also like to add a frame under the photo as a mat. So this first step will all be things UNDER the photo!

See how much pop just these few items under the photo give to the photo? It really helps to draw the eye to the photo and create interest in it.

Step 2: Leaves and Scatters

This second step is still going to mostly be under the photo, although we will want to duplicate a few leaves for on top of the photo, as well. Even if a kit only comes with one leaf, you can use it multiple times to create more depth.

Here is our layout now with the same leaf duplicated multiple times, as well as an added scatter:

Now perhaps you are thinking, “that is way too many leaves”, it’s okay! You’ll see how well they fit in with our last step! And notice that it is the same leaf element, just resized and turned different ways. I also placed two of them on top of the photo layer.

Step 3: Flowers and Ribbons

Last of all, we get to add in the flowers and ribbons! I also use string here too, just depending on what is in the kit I’m working with. Place some flowers and ribbons under the photo, even if only a tiny bit is sticking out. And then layer them between the leaf layers.

Here is our layout with the next step:

And there you have it! A beautiful cluster to frame your photo! You can top it off with any extras like buttons, staples, stitching, tags, etc. And of course, don’t forget your title and journaling!
