One of the things I have wanted for a really long time was my own set of tools! Kind of crazy, right? I wanted my own saw and my own sander and my own drill…you get the idea! My husband isn’t the type who really has a lot of these. He was an attorney for years and is now a theatre teacher and building just hasn’t been a hobby. Of course, he is getting his feet wet rather rapidly with building sets so that has been fun to watch! I grew up with a dad and brothers and even my mom who used tools all the time! When I was a little more than 2, my parents built most of our house together. They were always working on projects and building, sanding, painting, etc.
Recently, I earned a few gift cards of my choice from work. I had exceed the weekly goal with our metrics and so I got to choose about $75 worth of gift cards! I could have chosen dinner gift cards or movie gift cards, but instead, I chose to put it all into a Home Depot card. I was so excited to go and pick out the beginning set of my tools! I had done my homework. I knew exactly what I wanted, even the brand I wanted. But that is a big store and there were so many aisles and so many things that looked similar, so I asked a young man for help. He was an employee there and I asked him if he could tell me where the jigsaws were. He looked at me a minute and then said, “Puzzles? You might be in the wrong store.” So I guess even in 2019, it still isn’t “cool” for a woman to show up at a hardware store alone to buy her own supplies. After I explained what I wanted, he was very helpful and soon I was on my way home with a jigsaw, sander, a few blades and some wood! Oh and of course, my very sexy pair of plastic goggles!
Today’s post is the very first thing I ever cut from wood by myself! With only a few youtube videos and my daughter to help me hold down the wood on the table in our back yard, I went to work! You’ll see that it isn’t very straight. And even all the sanding in the world wouldn’t be enough to make it look truly good! But I didn’t care! This represented the beginning of a million ideas that have been in my head and I was in love with my new toys!
After cutting and sanding my wood (and making two extra sets for my daughters so they could paint along with me), we all sat down to paint! It was so much fun and a memory I’ll always cherish. There were no phones or tv shows pulling anyone away. We sat and painted and laughed and talked. With daughters who are 12 and 17, this was a cherished day for sure!
Once the blocks were painted with the base color, then I printed out the shapes and words I had prepared in Illustrator. I don’t own a fancy cutting machine so I decided to try another route! I’ve always love the paint, I’m just not the best and complete free hand! So, after printing the pieces for each block, I covered the backs with chalk and then turned them over and put them on my wood. I traced over the words and items with a pen and then painted them in. It isn’t perfect. It isn’t as good as vinyl, but I kind of love how homemade it feels! And my daughters picked out their shapes and words from my stock pile of illustrator files and painted their own blocks! It was so much fun!
I added a little ribbon and here is the final product!
