You head to the library, excited to find a good book to read. You walk in and see rows and rows of shelves. On each shelf you see hundreds of books lined up, in all different colors and sizes. You pick one out, curious to see what it is about, but there is no title. You choose a different book and and then another, but each are the same. Although they have beautiful photos and great colors, nothing gives you a clue or idea of what the book is actually about. So it can be with our scrapbook layouts.
Why are Titles important on a layout?
Titles should summarize your story or memory. It helps everyone know about it is about.
Titles will draw attention focally to the photos and should be placed in close proximity to your pictures.
Titles should be added last to complete your layout and be like the decorations on the cake!
Tips for choosing a good title:
This doesn't have to take long but can be such an important part of your page. Ask yourself what the central idea of your layout is. Who or what is your page about? If your page is about a summer picnic at the lake that you took your two daughters to, then your title would be something about the picnic. Even though your daughters may be the main one in the photos, your story is about the event that took place. On the other hand, if you took your daughter to that same lake for a photoshoot as a way to capture them together, at this age, then you could have their names as the title. In this example, the setting is the background. It isn't an event. Your daughters are the focus so the journaling and title would be about them.
Mediums for Creating Titles:
Digital Scrapbooking gives you so many fun options and mediums to create a title. Many kits come with Alpha's that coordinate and can be used to create a title. Here are a few examples of Alphas that I have in my shop:
Other good options include word strips, titles included in kits or a combination of these.
If you are new to digital scrapping and would like to learn how to create a title using an alpha, join our scrap club to access the library or tutorials we have there. I walk through in a video and through a PDF the steps to creating a title. You can learn more about the scrap club HERE.
As you carve out time to create a solid title for each of your layouts, you'll find that your albums gain a cohesive and connected feel to them. Just as you may browse a row of book titles, your layout titles will help tell your story at a glance!
